Fr. Benedictus Benny Phang Khong Wing was born in Surabaya on April 20, 1970. His childhood was spent in Surabaya. After graduating from Frateran Catholic High School Surabaya, he joined the seminary of St. Vincent de Paul in Garum, Blitar.
On July 19, 1990, he joined the Carmelite Order and did his novitiate in Batu. Finishing his two-year novitiate, he had his simple vows on July 12, 1992 and solemn vows on August 15, 1997. He was known as intelligent seminarian; moreover he is zealous with the fervent spirit of Prophet Elijah.
He was ordained a priest in the Cathedral of Malang on October 1, 1998. After the ordination he served as the vicar priest at Probolinggo Parish (1998-2000) while he was preparing himself for his further education. In 2000, he travelled to United States and took the Licentiate program at the Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC, and finished his study in 2005. During his stay in the United States, he was also active in ministering the Indonesian Catholic community in the United States.
After returning from the United States, he received a teaching assignment at Widya Sasana School of Philosophy and Theology, Malang. In 2007 he went to Rome to have his doctoral program on the field of moral theology. He completed his studies in 2011 and came back to teach at his former school. In 2013 he got the opportunity to attend the General Chapter of the Carmelite Order and was elected as the General Councilor for Asia, Australia and Oceania region. Therefore, from 2013 until today he resides in the Curia Generalate of the Carmelite Order in Rome, Italy.
With his cheerful and vibrant personality, he serves the order and the faithful people. He is very productive in giving Carmelite spirituality seminars, teaching Christian morality, and leading retreats. He is also active in mentoring Catholic youth. He has published some of his books on the Carmelite spirituality.
